National service was the common name for mandatory government service programmes (usually <a title=\"Military service\" href=\"\/wiki\/Military_service\" target=\"_blank\">military service<\/a>, also known as <a title=\"Conscription\" href=\"\/wiki\/Conscription\" target=\"_blank\">conscription<\/a>). The term became common British usage during and for some years following the Second World War. Many young people spent one or more years in such programmes. The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME; pronounced phonetically as &#8220;Reemee&#8221;) is a corps of the <a title=\"British Army\" href=\"\/wiki\/British_Army\" target=\"_blank\">British Army<\/a> that has responsibility for the maintenance, servicing and inspection of almost every electrical and mechanical piece of equipment within the\u00c2\u00a0army.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When he came out he served a further two years as an apprentice with the government and passed with ONC and HNC qualifications.
